President Obama’s timeline of nonsensical decisions

It isn’t just you.  Something just doesn’t feel right and things aren’t really adding up.  Even if you don’t follow the news that closely, something in your gut tells you that things don’t make sense.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we do not have a Republican/Democrat problem in this country.  We have a truth problem.  A greed problem and a spending problem.  And I don’t know about you but I’ve had enough of all of them.  In putting this timeline together, the President’s foreign policy decisions are making less and less sense compared to his words, his campaign promises and his earlier days in office.

January, 2009: President Obama signs executive order to close Gitmo

On Barack Obama’s 1st day as President of the United States, he issued an executive order to close Guantanamo Bay.  His director of national intelligence, Dennis Blair even came out saying that “It is not enough to set a standard and announce it,” (referring to Gitmo’s closure).  Blair went on to declare that by leaving Guantanamo Bay open, it “… is a rallying cry for terrorist recruitment and harmful to our national security, so closing it is important for our national security.” OK.  So by continuing to detain 245 terrorist suspects would inflame the Islamic World.  That’s an argument for another day but it is what the President “rigorously” believed when entering office and it’s a platform he ran on during the campaign.

Fast forward to 2011 and the Middle East is without a doubt, on fire.  Many believe it will spread through to Europe and ultimately end on our shores.  In the wake of the Egyptian revolution, one that President Obama encouraged youth to rise up and be a  part of Hosni Mubarak, a brutal tyrant, is out.  “They just want freedom!” everyone rallied.  But who’s in charge now?  Democratic elections will not be held until the fall but the Muslim Brotherhood is looking more and more likely to fill the void.  They (the Muslim Brotherhood) are now pushing for and advocating policies such as the formation of a “Modesty Police”.  This is where a bunch of Muslim men get together to “formally” administer inspections of women to determine their “purity.”  Yeah, that sounds so 1791.  OK.  I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.  It could be a case of good intentions with unintended consequences.

But if we’re truly concerned about the spread of freedom and democracy in the Middle East, why did President Obama turn a blind eye to the Iranian uprising, in February?  Isn’t President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei an even bigger threat to the western way of life than Hosni Mubarak?  Alright, alright.  Maybe our military is just overstretched, what with most of our troops fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Got it.

So, the protests spread throughout the Middle East and spontaneously and totally disconnectedly and find their way to Libya.  For days, Obama did what seemed to be nothing.  Then, following the advice of Samantha Power, National Security Council member and wife of Regulations Czar, Cass Sunstein,  we join forces with France and Great Britain and go into Libya.  And it’s all done under the guise of a humanitarian effort.  We’re not even calling it an Act of War, but rather a “kinetic military operation.”  I’m sorry but you can call a pig a supermodel but at the end of the day, it’s still a pig.   And to go even further, we’ve now gone so far as to arm the rebels with ties to Al Qaeda and  former detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

Now, he’s gone ahead and involved himself in the elections in the Ivory Coast.  This story got very little attention in the mainstream media.  In a video (seen below about 1min, 45sec in), President Obama appealed to current Christian President Laurent Gbagbo, to “stand down” and allow Muslim President-elect Alassane Ouatarra to preside and help to “restore the Ivory Coast’s place in the world.”  The violence is so bad that last weekend alone, 1000 people were killed.    What the hell are we doing?

So, now that we’ve launched 3 wars (or 2 wars and a “kinetic military operation” depending on who you talk to), we have to ask ourselves: ‘Have we further inflamed the Islamic World by our recent actions, or helped America’s reputation in the world?’

After all of this, the Obama Administration comes out on April 5, 2011 and says that they will indeed,  “send Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and four 9/11 co-conspirators to trial at military commissions at Guantanamo Bay”.  Wait.  Let’s go back to the beginning here.  Isn’t this exactly what we couldn’t do because  it would further inflame the Muslim World?

Trials for KSM & 4 other 9/11 co-conspirators will be held at Gitmo

Huh.

So, this brings us to Israel.  You know, our “ally” who is surrounded by revolutionary uprisings, led by people who all want to destroy it and “wipe it off the map”?  The country that’s roughly the size of New Jersey in the middle of a bunch of Texas sized nations?   Why is no one talking about this?

If you didn’t know any better you’d almost think that we were trying to encourage instability and inflame the Muslim world.  Call me cynical.

Let me just clarify here: I can’t be sure of the reasons why these decisions have been made. I just think it’s a discussion that we really need to have because there are questions that need answering. I’m not proposing a theory of why all these things are happening. Wouldn’t you like to know though? I know I sure would.
