Which shampoos are best for color-treated hair?

My current color. Burgundy, from Revlon Colorsilk $3.99

I started coloring my hair in the 8th grade.  The platinum tresses from my youth turned into what can only be described with words like “dishwater” and “dirty”.  Not for me.  Being the boxed hair-dye Queen that my mother was, it was inevitable that the crown would be passed down to me.  I’ve been everything from platinum to brown, auburn, dark brown, red, and pretty much everything in between.  I’ve always loved the idea of being able to change my look so quickly and, of course, cheaply!

Even when I could afford to go to the salon though, I’d always find my color would wash out so quickly.  Shades of red would wash out even faster.  A couple weeks after my color I’d go from feeling like a rock star, to a flip-flop wearing, slot-machine playing, split-end sportin’ slob (no offense).

I discovered that sulfates in the form of sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, were stripping the color out of my hair.  Even products that were made for color treated hair contained them.  What a disappointment!  Sulfate-free hair products are all the rage these days which means there are plenty of products to choose from.

I’ve compiled a short list of some of my favorites.  They have been put in order from least expensive to most expensive.  I hope you find one that works for you!

L’Oreal Everpure Sulfate-Free Color Care System  — Available at Walgreen’s for around $7 each  (Silver option)

Redken Nature’s Rescue  — Available online between $10-20  (Gold option)

Kronos — Available online for around $50.  Call and ask about a free trial offer.  This stuff made my hair feel like it did when I was a kid.  (Platinum option)

Your hair always looks FABULOUS, Tif! I think it’s just a matter of finding the right color for you and then finding a good way to maintain it. I’m stoked to hear you tried Everpure! I just stocked up at Target because they were on sale. $6/each…yup, I’m cheap!
